Two years ago someone’s son sent me a 6-inch designer heel for my birthday. The thought was exciting but the gift was not. The highest heel I can walk in is 3 inches. ‘ngomas’ are bae. See when someone asks what you want and you shout anything that could mean anything; a bag of waru, or even a bag of lemons. I learnt a lesson and this year I put up a list of what ad love for my birthday. My support team never disappoints. They show up, they pray, and above all love. Such a blessing. Right? (Kisses to you amazing people). See the older you get the easier it gets in figuring out what you want and also pronouncing it and letting the universe serve you. You also learn self-love and the power of gifting yourself, a good meal, a good sleep, a nice pair of wear, and if you love the roads a simple trip. This year I gift myself a trip to Diani and here are a few travel gifts ideas for travelers before I wear my bikinis. Some were gifted to me this year and others I would gift a traveler. For those within the city let’s explore a few easy to visit places that I have done within Nairobi.
The African Blanket
Masai shukas or kikois are a must-have for any traveler. You just never know what time you get home, weather change not to mention when picnic plans might come up. They range from Ksh 600 to 1500 and can be branded names or taglines of choice.
Sisal bags/Kiondo
Not a must-have but if your travel friend loves fashion, plants, and wall decors, this a great piece to get them. Kiondos can be used as a bag pack, wall décor by hanging one or two on a plain wall, and lastly as plant vases.
Out of Africa Macadamia nuts
To be specific the honey-coated Macadamia nuts. This is such a Kenyan product and for the sweet-toothed friends why not? They range from 250 ksh to 600 depending on the grams you choose. This is accessible in most supermarkets.
Emoji mugs/cups/water bottles
This is by far the coolest items to own and travel with. Range from 200 ksh to 1000 ksh. Can purchase one online or from a house of leather gift shop.
Travel pillows.
Most comfortable item while on the road. Sleeping or not sleeping neck support is important. Make sure to gift anyone, not just a seasoned traveler. We all hit the road once in a while.
Places to Visit around Nairobi
This deserves an entire post but let’s make it as easy as possible. I will only mention the places I have visited this year and over the years.
Picnic Destinations
Karura is the most obvious and affordable of them all. Located on Kiambu road, 30 or so minutes from the town center. Paradise lost and the Ever Green sites off Kiambu road as well are amazing gems. Enjoy a boat ride here, horse rides, and swings. Uhuru Park too within the city is an ideal picnic destination, especially for kids. Let them enjoy face paints, swings, and a boat ride
Short Drives destinations
Forget Naivasha, and visit 14 falls. A one and a half hour drive from Nairobi. If you choose public means board a ‘kenya mpya’ bus which goes to Thika or Makongeni, connect using a tuk-tuk or higher a taxi. This is a short distance from Thika town hence shouldn’t cost you much. If you are a meat lover try Olepolos meat place off Magadi road few kilometers from Kiserian. Finally, enjoy a scrumptious meal at the crave kitchen in Kikuyu town next to the Kikuyu railway station.
Hiking destinations
Forget Ng’ong hills and try Oloolua nature trails. For beginners, I would recommend this off Karen road an hour drive from the city depending on traffic. If you choose public means get a matatu number 24 that costs 100 shillings, alight at the junction of Bogani road and Karen road near the Karen Blixen museum. From the stage walk for 600 meters to the gate enjoy the trails, a waterfall, and bird watching.
